Yahrzeits / Remembering our Loved Ones
Memory is one of the most powerful forms of connection.
In Judaism, we have a strong tradition of remembering our loved ones after they have died. On the anniversary of the death of a loved one, we observe their yahrzeit. Traditionally, Jews light a yahrzeit candle (a special candle that burns for 25 hours), visit and place a stone on the grave of our loved one as a sign that we were there and have not forgotten them, that their spirit and memory will live on within us, and recite the mourner’s kaddish, the memorial prayer.
At Etz Chayim, on Shabbat, we read the names of the loved ones of our members whose yahrzeits fall during that week, and invite members to have an Aliyah, to be called to the Torah for a special blessing, or accept another honour during the service. The community usually recites the mourner’s kaddish together in solidarity with those who are in mourning or observing yahrzeit. It is customary to make a donation to the synagogue in honour of our loved one’s memory at the time of the yahrzeit.

We provide gorgeous Kiddush packages for b’nei mitzvah, baby namings, and L’chaims of all types, as well as a simple kiddush for birthday, anniversaries, or yahrzeits.
